The 2013 waste wise audit involved the whole school. Students from each class helped with the sorting, weighing, recording and cleaning up. Last year we carried out the initial audit to find out what sort of rubbish we produced at school and how much. We had some interesting items including a baby’s nappy. This year we went through the same process, saving the rubbish, sorting it into the different categories and weighing it. We are really pleased to be able to report that the amount of rubbish has been almost halved since the same time last year.
We do still have quite a bit oif rubbish that goes into the wheely bins that should be diverted to other places. Our paper towels, for example, could be composted. We certainly had a lot less plastic wrappers and gladwrap which is great. It tells us that far fewer students are bringing plastic to school. Soon we hope to be getting a new compost bin and this will help us to reduce waste even more. Thanks to Shelley for bringing all the equipment for the audit and helping us to carry it out.
