Room Five have discussed the problem of the rubbish that accumulates on the corner of Whangaripo Valley Road and Wayby Valley Road. One of our families live adjacent to the corner and the rubbish frequently ends up on their property as it is blown around. The problem seems to be getting worse.
Tomarata School erected signs a few years ago to try and encourage people to take more responsibility with their rubbish disposal. Recently, the Council have erected a sign as well. This seems to have had no effect.
Room Five have come up with some solutions. They think if there was a rubbish pick up that covered Wayby Valley Road and Tomarata Valley Road and Waitetei Road then the corner would not need to be a rubbish drop off place. All the people that lived down those roads would leave their rubbish at heir own gateways.
Another suggestion was that the Council install a camera to catch people dropping illegal rubbish. At the moment there are black bags, an old couch, boxes of bottles, and lots of other rubbish. If people received fines maybe they would think twice before dropping their rubbish.
We are not happy about the mess. We hope the Council will do something to improve the situation.
Thank you for your article Room 5. You have made some very good points. It is time the Council did something about this mess – it is an eyesore! It really is a disgrace that Council are unwilling to address this problem. Would this be acceptable in other towns?
What a good idea
Well done, Room 5. It really is time that the Council took some responsibility for the mess. It is becoming a real health and safety problem!
