Today Shelley, our waste wise facilitator, came to demonstrate our new bokashi compost system. We had saved our food scraps and some of the students helped to get the bokashi started. Some compost Zing was first spread on the bottom of the bucket and the food scraps were put on top. The food needed to be broken into small pieces. It was squashed down hard and another layer of compost Zing was spread on top. The lid is put on to keep the container as air tight as possible. After about 2 weeks the compost can be dug directly into your garden and will act like a fertilizer.

I like the new Bokashi Compost System we got, it has a weird name tho
I am intrigued by this ‘system” . Is the zing a bio agent? Does the system use bacteria to aid the decomposition? I am puzzled. I will be sure to look at this and ask some questions to satisfy my curiosity when I visit your lovely school in the near future.
We will look forward to showing it off. You will be able to smell the “zing”. It has a sweet and gardeny sort of smell.
