Today we made string telephones using plastic cups and string. When we spoke into the cup it made your voice louder. It was amplified. Our voice made the cup vibrate along the string to the other cup. When the string was tight we could feel the vibration. When the string was slack the vibrations got lost. The sound didn’t travel
Landlines work in the same way but they transfer the sound waves into an electrical signal which can travel even further over wires and the landlines don’t have to be kept tight. We found out that sounds travels more than 1,000 feet per second.
